Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie Photo: neon‘Eileen” is about Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie), a young clerical worker at a juvenile penitentiary in 1960s Massachusetts. But the film, like the character, is besotted with someone else: Dr. Rebecca St. John, the new prison psychologist, fresh from Harvard and, as played by Anne Hathaway , a suave and sultry modern woman. “Some people, they’re the real people, like in a movie,” Eileen’s father says, no doubt summoning in his daughter’s mind a vision of Rebecca. “And other people, they’re just there.” We hardly need the next line to know who he’s talking about: “That’s you, Eileen.”Yet the narrative charts her transition, sparked by an act of violence, from a spectator of life to one of its decisive participants. The conclusion, grim and swift, makes the meaning of what preceded it wither slightly in the rear view, but there are some cinematic seductions along the way.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

IT’S A SCENE so familiar as to be cliché: Staggered along a staircase wall or atop a dusty mantle, prom-night snapshots and Sears portraits perch haphazardly. Why do family photos always seem to get short shrift? Displaying these mementos stylishly can feel like a daunting challenge—but “a well-designed family gallery is one of the best storytelling opportunities you have,” said Paulina Perrault, a Sausalito, Calif., designer. Thankfully, sprucing up your snapshot act needn’t take long. Here, interior stylists share five strategies for creating displays that dodge both chaos and cheesiness.

MILAN (AP) — Thousands came out in a rain to watch an open-air Diesel show during Milan Fashion Week on Wednesday, making the denim-centric brand the hottest ticket in town. A latex dress hugged the form in a nearly nude beige, somewhere on the border between transparency and cover. Zip pockets are sewn into bra tops, while a trio of fanny packs become a bandeau top: perfect for the festival circuit. The technology going into the textiles is so cutting-edge that Rosso said that part of the production site is sealed off from the rest to protect the secrecy. “Touch the garments, and you will go out of your mind,’’ Rosso said.

Hong Kong (CNN) -- A promotional video by a state-owned railway in China that asked women to refrain from putting on makeup during train journeys has sparked a fierce backlash and a debate about sexism. On Saturday, the clip by China Railway was the most searched, most read and most debated item on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media platform – two months after it was originally posted. “Why does it have to be such a gender-focused case, of women putting on makeup, to illustrate uncivilized behavior?” one Weibo user asked. Another asked, “Will the next move involve banning women on trains once and for all?”CNN has reached out to China Railway for a comment. In response to inquiries by local press, staff at China Railway’s customer service hotline said putting on makeup is not banned on trains.

How to Stylishly Bring More Sunlight Into Your Home
  + stars: | 2023-04-01 | by ( Lauren Joseph | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
As Americans have grown more interested in walls, but no less interested in airiness, a new-old solution has emerged: interior windows. These apertures let light jump from room to room while creating a soothing sense of separation. When renovating her historic 1902 home in Grand Rapids, Mich., interior designer Jean Stoffer found 100-year-old storm windows there. She then painted the windows’ wood sashes black, in keeping with the home’s exterior windows. “The style of an interior window should be the same as or complementary to the home’s exterior windows,” Ms. Stoffer advised.
